Building up to his State of the Union address, President Obama announced a plan to provide free tuition to community college for 2-years degrees. Released via video, President Obama said that a 2-year degree could be “free to anyone willing to work for it.”
The proposal, based on the Tennessee Promise program, would require full- and half-time students to maintain a 2.5 GPA and make steady progress toward graduating. Community colleges would require accreditation that allows community college credit to transfer to 4-year university. Under the plan, the federal funds would cover 75% of the tuition costs with individual states funding the last 25%.
