On Friday, June 12, the House voted overwhelmingly against fast track authority. In a 126 – 302 vote, the House rejected the deal after immense pressure from President Obama and corporate interests. Among Oregon’s delegation, Sen. Jeff Merkley and Rep. Peter DeFazio were the only No votes on fast track authority.
This vote isn’t a sure defeat for the TPP – but it’s a testament to the strength of grassroots organizing. For months, activists in Oregon and across the nation have spoken out against the TPP and warned Congress of the consequences if they voted for the TPP. For the time being, they’re listening.
