We haven’t met, but our children have a lot in common

My name is Eric Stewart-Alicea. I am a parent in Bridgeport, Connecticut, a leader on the Parent Advisory Council and a Working Families candidate for the Bridgeport Board of Education.

And I need your help.

My city is a working-class city, and quality schools are critical to our future. I’m running because I believe that our schools must serve the students and the community. But the Bridgeport schools’ superintendent is a nationally-known corporate reformer, Paul Vallas. He’s a school privatizer who is more devoted to his ideology and his own career than to our city’s students.

But if our slate wins in November, we’ll have a majority on the Board of Education than can change direction and make sure our schools put the needs of our students first.

We’re fighting back. Donate $5 to the Working Families Party to support the Working Families candidates for Bridgeport Board of Education.

The current school administration has cut music and arts programs and cut special education, just to implement additional rounds of high-stakes testing. They even took funding out of the classrooms to pay the superintendent’s legal bills. Really.

Parents, teachers and voters in the community have had enough. We want our schools back. And for the first time in a long time, we have a chance.

Bridgeport has become the front line in a national fight over the future of our schools —  and we’re winning. In September, Working Families worked with educators and local families to help a slate of progressive Democrats beat conservative machine Democrats in a primary. Now if we can beat out a few Republicans in November, we’ll have a progressive majority in charge of the schools in our city for the first time — ever.

If we can raise $10,000 this week, we can double our door to door outreach program between now and Election Day.

We can’t do it without your help. Will you chip in $5 to help us meet our goal and help elect the Working Families team?
