Have the sniffles? Stay home.

Go to the doctor, and lose your job? Or stuff some tissues in pockets and go to work sick? No one wants to make that decision — and now, workers in New York City don’t have to.

New York City workers can now earn up to 5 days of paid time off a year to use if they or a family member gets sick.paid-sick-days-rally-e1378307039591-555x370

We’re celebrating today, but tomorrow we’re getting back to work. New York needs statewide public financing, a higher minimum wage and the ability to set a higher minimum wage for New York City. And in order to win, we’ll need Democratic control in the State Senate to circumvent Republican nay-sayers and actually pass progressive legislation.

Can you donate $3 to help elect Working Families Democrats to the State Senate so we can pass more landmark legislation like paid sick days?

pr097-14Paid sick days may seem like a no-brainer, but we fought an uphill battle for this victory
against the powerful Mayor Bloomberg and his corporate buddies. It would not have been possible without the work we did together with Gale Brewer, the bill’s primary sponsor, Speaker Melissa Mark-Viverito, and Mayor Bill de Blasio, who not only fought for paid sick leave during the campaign but expanded it to apply to thousands more workers as soon as he was in office.

That’s why electing Working Families Democrats to office is so important. Today’s candidates will be tomorrow’s State Senators who can pass our progressive priorities.

No one should have to risk losing their job just to see a doctor. Because of your activism, we’ve made sure workers in New York City don’t have to face that choice. Now let’s do the same for the rest of the state.
