About “Voting While Black” Text-a-Thons & The importance of down-ballot races:

Black voters play such a critical role in this election cycle — whether it’s showing up to make sure that the racist rhetoric and proposed policies don’t become law at the federal level or showing up to vote in a local district attorney’s race that could shift the way our communities are policed. That’s why Color Of Change PAC is running “Voting While Black” – the first ever Black Battleground State program where we will reach out to over 2 million Black voters across the country with key races on the line. We have to show up for each other if we ever hope to win systemic changes at both the national and local level. Flexing our voting power is one way we force elected officials to be more accountable to Black folks. Text-A-Thons are one of Color Of Change PAC’s core voter contact strategies to mobilize Black voters to the ballot box in 2016. At these actions, we want to create a fun, relaxed environment for COC members and partners to build community as they text as many Black voters as possible. We want people to walk away feeling like “I can text from home” and “I can get my friends to join in” to motivate as many people as possible to commit to our shared Black voter contact goals so we can show real impact in this year’s elections and build capacity of the future.
