WFP Endorses Stacey Abrams for Governor of Georgia

Key endorsement for Abrams as Progressive Group Says Abrams “Will Put Government To Work for All Working Families”

ATLANTA – Today, the Working Families Party announced its endorsement for Stacey Abrams for Governor of Georgia. The Working Families Party is a grassroots political organization that fights to make government more responsive to the needs every day families.

“I am honored to have the support of the Working Families Party. Together, we are committed to fostering an economy that works for every Georgian, regardless of zip code, and creating a government that lifts up the voice of everyone,” said Stacey Abrams. “I look forward to working alongside them to create a state where we harness the potential of every Georgian so they have the capacity to succeed — not just survive.”

Organizers with the Working Families Party cited Abrams’ proposal to make childcare more accessible and affordable and her support for healthcare for all among the key reasons that she won the group’s support.

“Stacey Abrams is someone we can count on to always stand with working families. Whether it’s pushing to make childcare more affordable, expanding healthcare coverage or stopping job misclassification that cheats workers out of pay and benefits, she is fighting to make a difference in the lives of working people,” said Eric Robertson, political director of Teamsters Local 728, who is helping to organize the Working Families Party in Georgia.

“Americans are hungry for leaders who will put government to work for all working families, instead of doling out goodies to campaign donors. Stacey Abrams is one such leader with integrity and a commitment to fairness for all,” said Dan Cantor, the national chair of the Working Families Party. “The people of Georgia will be proud to call her their next Governor.”

The WFP’s endorsement for Abrams is among the WFP’s first 2018 endorsements, along with Randy Bryce for Congress in Wisconsin’s 1st district and Ben Jealous for Governor for Maryland.

The Working Families Party is a national grassroots progressive political organization that fights for working class and middle class families, and recruits, trains, and elects leaders to public office who will put the needs of all working families, ahead of the demands of the wealthy and well connected. In 2017, hundreds of WFP-endorsed candidates were elected to state and local office, including new mayors in cities across the South, including in New Orleans, LA, Jackson, MS, Birmingham, AL, and Charlotte, NC.

Stacey Abrams has proven track record of supporting working families in the state. As Minority Leader, she fought to stop tax increases on low and middle income families, passed legislation on behalf of military families, fought for grandparents and other kin raising children, protected reproductive rights and brokered agreements that allowed for investments in transit and critical infrastructure.

The Georgia AFL-CIO, International Brotherhood of Electrical Workers Local 613, The Georgia State Building and Construction Trades Council, Atlanta North Georgia Building Trades Council, the International Union of Painters and Allied Trades District Council 77, the International Union of Operating Engineers Local 926, and the Retail, Wholesale and Department Store Union Southeast Council have each endorsed Stacey Abrams because of her commitment to creating a Georgia that ensures the rights of working families. Congressman John Lewis, Congressman David Scott, Congressman Hank Johnson, and Rev. Dr. Joseph Lowery have also endorsed Stacey Abrams for governor. Progressive organization Democracy for America, with over 30,000 members in Georgia and a million members nationwide, NARAL Pro-Choice America, Daily Kos, Let America Vote, Higher Heights for America, and EMILY’s List, the nation’s largest resource for women in politics with more than five million members nationwide, have also endorsed Stacey Abrams for Governor.
