After former Governor Scott Walker struck a deal to give $4 BILLION in tax subsidies to Foxconn in exchange for building a new manufacturing plant here in Wisconsin, we just learned that thousands of those jobs aren’t coming to Wisconsin after all.
According to Reuters, the multinational electronics manufacturer is “reconsidering plans to make advanced LCD panels” in Wisconsin, and says “it intends to hire mostly engineers and researchers rather than the manufacturing workforce the project originally promised.”
Let’s be clear: This huge giveaway to Foxconn was ALWAYS a bad deal for working people. Not only do they have a horrific record of mistreating their workers, but under the deal, the state of Wisconsin would have paid Foxconn $230,700 per job. And now we learn that the jobs we were promised probably aren’t coming to Wisconsin after all.
Enough is enough. We need to stop giving away billions in subsidies to dubious megacorporations who always fail to deliver on their promises. If you agree, then sign the petition calling on our elected leaders to reject corporate welfare scams and to support good-paying infrastructure jobs as part of a Green New Deal instead.
In my race for Congress, I spoke repeatedly about how the Foxconn deal was just another corporate boondoggle. I’m sad to say it, but I was right.
The deal was supposed to bring 13,000 mostly-manufacturing jobs to Wisconsin to build LCD TV screens. But instead, Foxconn is now backing away from their plans.
I was a union ironworker for years. I spent my career helping build southeastern Wisconsin. There is a real sense of pride in helping build up your community with your own two hands. But today, those types of jobs are few and far-between, all while our infrastructure is falling deeper into disrepair.
Meanwhile, corporations like Foxconn and Amazon are getting huge taxpayer subsidies for the promise of jobs that often never materialize.
We have a better idea: Invest that money into a Green New Deal to create millions of good-paying green jobs and bring our infrastructure into the 21st century.
