Gwinnett is the fastest-growing county in the state. The county is growing more and more diverse with shifting demographics showing that what was once a majority white county is now majority-minority with Latinx, Asian, and Black households making up 60% of the population today.
With this rapid growth come some challenges as well, one significant one is traffic. Gwinnett County has reached the point of diminishing returns when it comes to adding more lanes and highways. It’s time for a more sustainable and equitable solution: the Gwinnett transportation expansion plan, a partnership with MARTA.
In a mobile, thriving city like Atlanta, transportation is about justice: environmental justice so that communities aren’t suffering from the devastating effects of more roads and increased traffic; economic justice in the form of access to better jobs making Gwinnett county competitive with other places in the city for higher wages; and healthcare justice making it possible for folks with limited mobility to access the services they need to thrive.
Last night, at a stop on her “Thank You” tour, Stacey Abrams said, “When MARTA goes to Gwinnett, opportunity comes to Georgia.” It’s critical for our folks to turn out to vote. But in order for us to lead Georgia forward, we have to mobilize our friends and neighbors in Gwinnett to get out the vote right now.
Let’s take our powerhouse tools and resources and use them to change the game in Georgia for the better — together!
