New Mexico Working Families Party Endorses Teresa Leger Fernandez in Democratic Primary for CD-3

Albuquerque — The New Mexico Working Families Party announced its endorsement of Teresa Leger Fernandez in the Democratic primary for the state’s 3rd Congressional District. The endorsement comes after thoughtful internal discussion among members, affiliates and staff and a review of questionnaires and records of candidates.

“Teresa will not only make history as the first woman elected to represent District 3 in Northern New Mexico,  she will be the unapologetic progressive warrior we need fighting for us in Washington,” said NM Working Families Party State Director Eric Griego.  “We’re proud to support Teresa.”

After graduating from Yale University and Stanford Law School, Teresa came back to New Mexico to serve the community where she was raised. For more than three decades she has fought for local communities in New Mexico on issues ranging from voter access to water, affordable housing and infrastructure.  She has deep roots in the Third Congressional District in northern New Mexico, where she was born and has raised her children.

“Teresa shares our working family values because she has lived them,” said Andrea Serrano, Executive Director of Organizers in the Land of Enchantment (OLE) and a member of the Working Families Party National Committee. “As a working mother raised in a working class family, Teresa knows the struggles facing most New Mexicans and will fight to improve their lives.”

The Working Families Party is a grassroots progressive political party that fights to make our country work for the many, not just the few. WFP recruits, trains, and elects the next generation of progressive leaders to office.

In the space of a few years the New Mexico Working Families Party has become a major challenger to the Democratic Party status quo. The WFP helped oust the most conservative Democrat in the New Mexico legislature, Debbie Rodella, and helped Stephanie Garcia Richard become the first woman and first Latina State Land Commissioner.

By supporting candidates who are engaging voters with a compelling working families agenda, challenging powerful Democrats, and holding elected officials at all levels accountable, WFP has given the progressive wing of the Democratic party a stronger and more effective voice.

“We need bold leaders in Congress who will fight to for a living wage, pass a new Green Deal and Medicare for All,” said Working Families Party National Director Maurice Mitchell.  “Teresa will fight for a New Mexico and an America that works for the many, not the few. That’s why we are proud to stand with her.”
