Working Families Party Statement on Biden Withdrawal
In response to President Biden’s decision to end his re-election campaign, Maurice Mitchell, National Director of the Working Families Party, has issued the following statement:
“We thank President Biden for his decision to pass the torch to the next generation of leadership. In just four years in office, President Biden passed the Inflation Reduction Act through a nearly deadlocked Congress, made history by joining UAW auto workers on the picket line, and guided the country out of a global pandemic and an economic crisis.
“The next Democratic President has the opportunity to build on these achievements, while turning the page on the United States’s disastrous support for the Israeli government’s ongoing human rights abuses in Gaza.
“We plan to engage in a careful endorsement process with our members, chapters, and affiliates over the coming days, but what’s clear to us is that Donald Trump cannot win this election. Trump and his MAGA friends have created a 900-page plan called ‘Project 2025’ that says exactly what they want to do if they win power. They want to destroy public education, ban abortion nationwide, and make it even harder for workers to organize for better wages.
“The contrast with our vision for America couldn’t be clearer. We’re going to organize this year and in the coming years to tackle climate change, restore abortion rights, and build an economy that puts working people first.
“Our party is ready to mobilize our base to defeat Trump in November and stop his right-wing authoritarian movement in its tracks.”
