Vote Keron Alleyne for State Assembly!

Affordable Housing
Housing is a human right. A stable home is the foundation that allows people to invest in their families, neighborhood and surrounding community. Without this stability, increased homelessness contributes to a vicious cycle of poverty, unemployment, neglect, and missed opportunities for growth resulting in social dislocation as well as dilapidated communities. Despite the urgent need for affordable housing, New York State continues to provide tax breaks for developers at the expense of the people. This cannot continue as hyper-gentrification in our neighborhoods has contributed to the homeless crisis which has resulted in the greatest number of people in shelters ever recorded in New York City. Keron, will advocate for new and innovative solutions that will make a difference in the lives of the communities he represents and the people of this State.
- Keron will fight to end certain real estate subsidies and divert those funds to public and affordable housing. Keron will also work towards redirecting local taxes on luxury developments to programs designed to end the City’s homeless crisis.
- Keron will fight for a state-sponsored community land trust program to create true affordable housing
- Keron knows that fighting for capital improvements and increased funding for the New York City Housing Authority (NYCHA) promises to improve the quality of life for Brooklyn residents and all New Yorkers.
- Keron with your help, will raise hell until there’s a #Homesguarantee for all.
- Keron will use the full force of his Assembly office to fight unjust foreclosures.
Education
When we were children, we were all told that education was the key to unlock all the doors to our future. Education was supposed to be the panacea and hard work was the key ingredient in the recipe. However, local, state, state, and federal governments have not held up their end of the deal because they have divested, rather than invested in education. In fact, New York currently ranks second-to-last in the nation on equity in education spending. For years, the State has consistently underfunded our schools and this has forced administrators to reduce funding in valuable resources like school counselors, therapists, extra-curricular programming or supplies. While this year’s budget included $1.4 billion in Foundational Aid for schools as part of the Campaign for Fiscal Equity settlement, we have to make sure that money for our schools is allocated in the next state budget.
- Keron will fight for increased funding for early childhood education programs which promise to provide our children with the skills and tools necessary to succeed as adults.
- Keron will also fight for increased investment in restorative justice practices as opposed to punitive responses to wrongdoing in our schools. Keron understands that the school-to-prison pipeline has been made possible by zero-tolerance school discipline policies that criminalize normal youthful behavior and introduce students to police officers, prosecutors, and judges.
Higher Education
Additionally, we now realize that pursuing a college degree has become very expensive. College student loan debt has ballooned to over $1.4 trillion with no clear plateau or relief plan in sight. Keron, knows from experience that crushing student loans have forced many New Yorkers to defer starting a family or purchasing a home. This cannot continue because New Yorkers cannot continue to dedicate a significant share of their incomes to paying their student loans which forces them to live on the economic margins.
- Keron knows we must make a college education free for everyone who wants to pursue a higher education and will work towards making CUNY and SUNY tuition free for everyone.
- Keron, will fight for full-funding of the state owned debt to public schools.
- Keron will fight to restore college financial aid for people in prison. This will ensure that those who leave prison will be prepared to re-enter society. Keron recognizes this as a moral imperative that we have neglected for too long.
- Keron will push to eliminate all student debt so no one will be saddled with a mortgage sized debt in exchange for an education.
Healthy Communities for All
Healthcare is a human right and everyone has a right to adequate healthcare. However, our healthcare system provides inadequate health care or no coverage to many New Yorkers. Healthcare costs have continued to increase and many businesses now shift healthcare costs to their employees or simply stop providing healthcare. We need to overhaul the current system that saddles individuals and families with medical debt and implement a universal single-payer health care system for all New Yorkers.
The current COVID-19 pandemic has also revealed how inadequate our health care system is and how vulnerable Black, Latinx, and indigenous communities are due to inadequate access to healthcare. Despite the existence of these healthcare inadequacies, former Governor Andrew Cuomo went ahead and cut $400 million from hospitals and $2.5 million from Medicaid. This assault on health care cannot continue if we are to truly succeed in providing health care to all New Yorkers.
- Keron will fight for Medicare for all.
- Keron will fight for increased healthcare funding to expand healthcare access in areas that have been designated as medically underserved areas.
- Keron will fight, not just to increase hospital funding, but to increase the number of hospitals in areas where they have no access to emergency rooms.
- Keron will fight to increase the funding for school-based health centers as well as passing legislation that will create a permanent Medicaid carve-out for these centers.
- Keron, will raise the voices and lived experiences of neighbors to end crippling medical debt, a first in the nation state relief plan.
- Keron plans to fund community-based projects that will provide healthy and affordable food options. Additionally, Keron will advocate for community programs and work-force training programs designed to promote the health and wellness of our communities.
From Criminal Injustice to Restorative Justice
We need to dismantle the existing racist criminal injustice system. From the Rockefeller Drug Laws to the Prison Industrial Complex, the criminal justice system has produced mass incarceration which has disproportionately impacted Black and Latinx communities. Until bail reform became a reality, many New Yorkers often languished in jail because they could not afford to pay their cash bail. This also increased the number of New Yorkers who were incarcerated for extended periods of time, often for minor offenses. But there is still more to be done. Police brutality remains a horrific reality for Black and Latinx New Yorkers and it’s time to enact the type of reforms that improve our communities rather than increase the number of police officers in our community.
- Keron supports defunding the police which includes diverting economic resources from police departments to fund health care, housing, education, and living wage jobs in communities that need them most.
- Keron supports community control of policing. Communities should have the power to hire and fire local police commanders in their community and to remove all racist, brutal, and disrespectful police officers from their communities. Communities should also have the power to determine policing policies in their neighborhoods. Policies such as stop and frisk have been detrimental to many Black and Latinx communities.
- Keron believes that the police commissioner should be an elected position and not one appointed by the mayor which would allow for greater accountability.
- Keron believes in an independent civilian agency with investigative and prosecutorial power to prosecute police officers accused of police brutality and the abuse of deadly force.
- Keron would fight for increased police accountability where police officers who kill or brutalize civilians are taken off the police force, jailed, and lose their pensions.
- Keron supports a statewide Fair Chance Act which prevents employers from inquiring whether a job applicant has a criminal record until they have made a conditional offer for employment. This will allow those returning from prison to find employment quickly.
- Keron, will protect the reforms recently put into effect to restore justice in the system and simultaneously push for more.
- Keron, will propose legislation to end the inequities wrapped in laws that encourage incarceration and protect unscrupulous police officers from punishment.
- Keron, together with advocates will support the cure violence model and community based partners in creating true justice for all.
- Keron will call for an end to wrongful imprisonment of political activist.
Transportation Equity
New Yorkers deserve an efficient and reliable public transportation system that allows them to travel to school, work, doctor’s appointments, parks etc. To this effect, public transportation should be understood as a public good. Currently, our public transportation system is in crisis. Additional funds must be routed to the MTA and not circumvented for non-essential expenses or a new police force! Former Governor Cuomo did a poor job with regard to oversight and innovation. Keron, knows we can do better, we will do better and we must do better.
- Keron calls for a free public transportation system.
- Keron, will advocate for a reprioritized MTA budget which puts working people first.
- Keron will make sure that adequate funds are directed towards the MTA’s capital improvements projects. These capital improvements will include much needed upgrades to increase accessibility for disabled New Yorkers particularly here in East New York. essential fixes and upgrades; NOT an authoritarian force which targets Black and Brown bodies.
