WFP Endorses Jane Kim for California Insurance Commissioner

SAN FRANCISCO — Working Families Party is endorsing Jane Kim in her run for California Insurance Commissioner. Kim will harness the power of the office, too often beholden to the insurance industry, to actually serve residents by ensuring that everyone can access affordable coverage.

Jane Kim was until recently the State Director of California Working Families Party, where she led the recruitment, training, and election support for scores of elected officials across the state. These Working Families Party-aligned elected officials are serving on school boards, city councils, and in the state legislature, advocating for affordable housing, accessible healthcare, adequately funded public schools, and other issues squeezing working families. She also led the Party’s recent work on Proposition 50, overcoming billionaire spending resulting in a people-led victory.

“It’s far past time for California’s Insurance Commissioner to stand up to corporate greed and make insurance more affordable for working people,” said Jane Kim. “We need to put this office to work for everyone, not for insurance corporations and their CEOs.There’s no one I’d rather have in my corner than Working Families Party. Together, we’ve shown what working people can accomplish when we come together to make change.”

In her race for California Insurance Commissioner, Jane won’t take donations from the insurance industry or corporate PACs so she can achieve her ambitious agenda for working Californians. Her proposals include universal coverage for climate-related disasters for all residents, capping insurance company CEO pay and excessive industry profits, and guaranteeing healthcare for every child in our state.

“Californians need a fierce advocate like Jane Kim for Insurance Commissioner because they’ve been used by this industry that puts greed first and delivering for customers last,” said Maurice Mitchell, National Director of the Working Families Party. “I know firsthand the passion and drive that Jane brings to our work of unrigging government so that it benefits working people, not billionaires and corporations.”

As part of its endorsement, the Working Families Party is committing to a significant statewide organizing effort. WFP and partners will knock doors, engage voters face-to-face, and communicate directly with communities, building the grassroots infrastructure to win on Election Day.

Jorge Contreras, the Deputy Director of California Working Families Party, is now the interim State Director of California Working Families Party. A San Jose native, Jorge has worked on dozens of campaigns across 12 states, helping elect working-class champions at the local, state, and national levels. He was the first staffer on the ground for the California Working Families Party in 2020 and has been with Working Families Party organizations for over eight years.
