NJ WFP Celebrates Analilia Mejia’s Victory

“Analilia Mejia’s win is a victory for New Jersey’s working people”

NEW JERSEY — The New Jersey Working Families Party on Thursday celebrated Analilia Mejia’s victory in the special general election for New Jersey’s 11th congressional district. Mejia is the former state director of the New Jersey Working Families Party and a progressive leader.

“Analilia Mejia’s win is a victory for New Jersey’s working people. Just months after winning a historic special election primary, Analilia will be heading to Congress to fight for the people of the 11th district,” said Sunni Vargas, Political Director for the New Jersey Working Families Party. “Analilia has been a leading force in New Jersey for her entire career, driving campaigns that won major victories for working people, including a $15 minimum wage, paid sick time, and lower barriers to voting. Her accomplishments in New Jersey demonstrate what she will be able to achieve in D.C., and the Working Families Party will proudly support her in delivering change in Washington and beyond.”

Analilia started her career with 32BJ SEIU and later led the Working Families Party in New Jersey. As head of the NJ Working Families Party, Analilia played a pivotal role in electing Ras Baraka as Mayor of Newark and drove successful campaigns to raise the minimum wage to $15 an hour, guarantee paid sick days for all, and pass automatic voter registration. Later she served as political director for Bernie Sanders’ 2020 presidential campaign, and co-led the Center for Popular Democracy.

The New Jersey Working Families Party has become a major player in state politics since the Party defeated the corrupt county line system. In the primary election for New Jersey’s 11th congressional district, the WFP endorsed Mejia in her historic victory. The NJWFP helped elect Jersey City Mayor James Solomon and a slate of city council members who are moving the city in a more progressive direction. Last year, we elected pro-working-class champions in competitive state legislative primaries and endorsed Newark Mayor Ras Baraka in his second-place finish in a historic gubernatorial primary.

Nationwide, the Working Families Party has endorsed a slate of candidates including Bob Brooks running in the Republican-held PA-07; Mai Vang, who is challenging 20-year-incumbent Doris Matsui in CA-7; Brad Lander, who is challenging Rep. Dan Goldman in NY-10; and Randy Villegas who is running in the Republican held CA-22.
