WFP Endorses Brian Poindexter in OH-07

“We should be electing more working class people to Congress who share experiences with the communities they want to represent”

OHIO — The Working Families Party on Monday endorsed Brian Poindexter for Ohio’s 7th congressional district. Poindexter, an ironworker and local city councilman, is running in the Democratic primary to face Rep. Max Miller in November.

“Brian Poindexter is the exact kind of candidate we should be sending to Congress from Ohio’s 7th district,” said Aleena Starks, Ohio State Director for the Working Families Party. “We should be electing more working class people to Congress who share experiences with the communities they want to represent. Brian has lived a life that so many in this district can relate to. In Congress, Brian will take on the big corporations ripping us off, fight to expand healthcare for everyone, and protect and expand unions. We’re proud to support him.”

“Proud to announce our endorsement by the Working Families Party. We’re building a campaign that puts workers first, people over power, and fights for a future where results matter more than rhetoric,” said Brian Poindexter, candidate for congress in Ohio’s 7th district. “We’re proud to have WFP’s support in this race as we work to bring working-class values to Washington!”

Brian Poindexter is a father, union ironworker with Local 17 in Cleveland, apprenticeship instructor, and Brook Park City Councilman. He began working at age 15 in a machine shop while lettering in three high school sports. After years working in kitchens, factories, and the moving industry — where he earned his Class A CDL and traveled all 48 continental states — Brian joined the Ironworkers in 2007. He worked his way through the apprenticeship program while earning an Associate Degree in Applied Industrial Technology from Cuyahoga Community College. He served as a union organizer from 2012 to 2014 and has led some of the region’s most complex construction projects. Brian is the proud father of two daughters and is running for Congress because working people deserve real representation.

Last year, all ten candidates that the Ohio Working Families Party supported advanced to runoffs, with six ultimately winning seats: Shenise Turner-Sloss, now the Mayor of Dayton; Fran Wilson, Akron City Council; Dr. Antoinette Miranda, Columbus City School Board; Ajmeri Hoque, Franklin County Judge; and Nikki Hudson and Tanmay Shah, Cleveland City Council.

Nationwide, the Working Families Party has endorsed a slate of congressional candidates, including firefighter and union leader Bob Brooks running in the Republican-held PA-07; Mai Vang, who is challenging 20-year-incumbent Doris Matsui in CA-7; Brad Lander, who is challenging Rep. Dan Goldman in NY-10; and Randy Villegas who is running in the Republican held CA-22.
