WFP Endorses Harry Dunn for Congress

Democracy defender earns WFP backing as campaign focuses on affordability, accountability; standing up to corporate power

MARYLAND — Working Families Party announced its endorsement of Harry Dunn for Congress in Maryland’s 5th Congressional District, backing a proven defender of democracy who is running to take on corporate power, lower costs for working families, and deliver real accountability in Washington.

“Maryland families deserve leaders that fight as hard for them as they do every day to put food on the table, pay the rent, cover child care, and get the healthcare they need,” said Maurice Mitchell, National Director of the Working Families Party. “Harry Dunn is standing with working people against corporate power, high costs, the Trump administration, and a political system that is not delivering enough for families,”

Dunn grew up in Maryland’s 5th Congressional District, attended Surrattsville High School in Clinton, and went on to serve as a U.S. Capitol Police officer, became a national voice for democracy after defending the U.S. Capitol during the January 6th attack. His priorities include lowering utility bills, protecting democracy, defending working people from corporate abuse, fighting for Medicare for All, investing in good union jobs, and ensuring that communities across Maryland’s 5th District have a real voice in Congress.

“This campaign is about the people who work hard, play by the rules, and still struggle to get ahead. The people of Maryland’s 5th District deserve leaders who fight as hard as they do every single day, and I’m proud to have the Working Families Party in this fight with us,” said Harry Dunn. “I’ve never been the kind of person who stays quiet while people get pushed around. I stood up for our democracy on January 6th. Now I’m running for Congress to stand up for the families Washington abandoned and bring real opportunity back to this district.”

The Working Families Party’s endorsement signals growing momentum for Dunn in a competitive Democratic primary. WFP will support Dunn by helping communicate his message to voters, lifting up his record of service, and making clear that Maryland’s 5th District deserves a representative who will fight for working people, not corporate donors or political insiders.

The Working Families Party is sending working families champions to Congress, from Analilia Mejia in New Jersey to Chris Raab and Bob Brooks, who won their primaries in Pennsylvania yesterday, along with others around the country. The Party’s Working Families Guarantee, which Dunn is committed to endorse, is a roadmap of bold economic solutions to make life more affordable for all working families.

“Harry Dunn has already shown us what courage looks like,” Mitchell added. “Now Maryland voters have the chance to send him back to the Capitol — not just to defend democracy from the outside, but to fight for working families from the inside.”
