People Power Beats Money in Michigan

Michigan Working Families Party sweeps federal; state and local primary victories. WFP champions power MI House of Representatives flip to Democratic control .

DETROIT — Branden Snyder, State Director of Michigan Working Families Party made the following statement about the general election results:

“The power of the voters overcame hundreds of millions of dollars in corporate and PAC spending to elect working people’s champions up and down the ballot, from Working Families Party federal candidates Abdul El-Sayed, William Lawrence, and Donavan McKinney to flipping seats on the Wyoming City Council. No amount of spending could convince Michiganders to maintain the broken status quo. At the ballot box, the money didn’t matter — what voters are experiencing in their everyday lives did. It also powered their overwhelming support for the Michigan Money Out of Politics (MMOP) Proposition 2.

“MI WFP also congratulates endorsed candidates Jaime Churches and Katrina Manetta who unseated Republicans in suburban Detroit districts and, along with other WFP champions, flipped the MI House of Representatives to Democratic control. With a trifecta, we can strengthen minimum wage and paid family and medical leave legislation as well as democracy and voting rights bills. But even with a trifecta, we know that corporate Democrats will still stand in the way of ensuring that working families come first. That’s why MI WFP will continue to build on these victories, recruiting, training, and electing WFP champions at all levels of government.”
