WFP 2024 Presidential Endorsement Vote FAQ

After weeks of speculation, President Biden announced on Sunday, July 21 that he would no longer be a candidate for President and withdrew from the race and endorsed Vice President Kamala Harris to be the next Democratic nominee.

On Monday, July 22, at the Working Families National Committee meeting in Philadelphia, the delegates voted to authorize a process for the WFP to consider our endorsement for Kamala Harris for President.

The member vote will be open from Monday, July 22 at 2:00pm Eastern Time to Tuesday, July 23 at 2:00pm Eastern Time.

Who can vote?

All WFP members will receive an endorsement ballot via email and/or SMS. Individuals may only vote once, and ballots are not transferable.

How does one become a WFP member?

You can become a WFP member by subscribing to our email or text list. Only members who have subscribed as of July 21, 2024 will be eligible to vote on the presidential endorsement question.

What are WFP members voting on?

WFP members will vote on the question of whether to endorse the likely Democratic nominee VP Kamala Harris so that we can immediately begin our general election work to defeat Donald Trump.

I’ve already voted, can I change my vote?

You can change your vote during the voting period. The most recent vote you cast will be counted as your final decision. Only one vote per person will be counted.

Why is WFP making an endorsement?

We are committed to building political power for the working class, and the President has an outsized role in our ability to organize, build power, and make material changes in working peoples’ lives.

What would endorsing Kamala Harris mean for the WFP?

A WFP endorsement would mean that we think there’s more opportunity to build power for the working class with Kamala Harris in office than Donald Trump. An endorsement now would allow us to immediately begin our door-to-door canvassing, texting, digital organizing, and phone-banking.

How does WFP’s endorsement vote for president work?

The WFP is building a national party that aligns the power of organizations like unions and community organizations with the power of our individual membership base. Our endorsement process is built to reflect our power-building model.

The Working Families National Committee — which is made of delegates representing WFP state chapters as well as national progressive organizations, unions and movement leaders — will comprise 50% of the total vote share. WFP members will also receive 50% of the total vote share. The two numbers are combined, and the final result is the WFP’s decision.

A threshold of 50% of the total vote must be surpassed to secure the endorsement.

How will the results be announced?

We’ll announce the results of WFP’s endorsement process following the close of voting.

Has WFP endorsed in previous elections for president?

Yes, the Working Families Party has endorsed candidates running for president in both general elections (2020, 2016) and in Democratic primaries.

Who makes the rules?

The Working Families National Committee and Executive Committee have the responsibility to oversee and authorize the WFP’s presidential endorsement process.

What is the Working Families National Committee?

The Working Families National Committee is our party’s highest governing body. It is made up of representatives of WFP state chapters as well as unions,  grassroots organizations and movement groups that are core parts of our party — which each have their own processes to arrive at decisions on the WFP presidential endorsement. (State chapters are themselves made up of individual activists as well as progressive organizations, including community organizations and unions who are building the WFP.) The National Committee elects from within its ranks an Executive Committee to make decisions when it is not in session.

I’m a registered Democrat (or a member of another party). Does joining as a member of the Working Families Party impact my voter registration?

No, participation in the Working Families Party is open to voters in all parties as long as you share our vision of a nation that puts working people first.

If you’re a registered Democrat, you can still be a WFP member and keep your voter registration in the Democratic Party and vote in your state’s Democratic primaries.

What is the Working Families Party, anyway?

The Working Families Party is a national, grassroots progressive political party that fights to make our country work for the many, not just the few. WFP recruits, trains, and elects the next generation of progressive leaders to office. We are fighting for a brighter future for America. One where the economy works for everyone, not just the wealthy and well-connected. One where politicians are accountable to working people, instead of Wall Street lobbyists and corporate CEOs. One where all of us, no matter where we come from, can find a good job, get healthcare when we need it, afford a home, send our kids to good schools, and have a secure retirement.
